Christmas Fair at The Old Yard

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas... and so the song goes.

Last year was the first year we decided to visit the Christmas Fair which was held at The Old Yard in Castledermot, Co. Kildare and it really was such a beautiful experience that when I saw it been advertised again this year, I knew we'd have to pop on over for a visit.

Early Maternity Photoshoot

I announced a while back on my Instagram of our upcoming arrival. Myself and Shane are delighted to be able to say that we are expecting a bundle of joy, with its expected date of arrival being 14th February 2018. We are just over the moon with the news, and although I do think you're never fully expecting to get the news, we were more than happy with it as it's something we knew that we wanted after the wedding.

Autumn / Halloween Decor

As my husband will tell you, I'm really not the biggest fan of Halloween - probably the wearing of a black bin bag as a vampire / witch costume as a child taking its toll! For me, Christmas is really where it's at. However, Shane on the other hand adores Halloween and all the costume making that comes along with it.

When we moved into the house, I did decide to try and work on injecting a little bit more Halloween spirit into the house as he's such a big fan of it.

I'm not overly keen of the usual decorations that you find in the shops around this time, but after a lot of careful  searching and two years of keeping an eye out for things that would work in the house at this time of year I think I've managed to create a style of Halloween / Autumn decor that manages to bring a bit of the spirit that he loves in which still managing to stay true to my decorative style.

Autumnal / Halloween Flower Workshop

We finally got our electricity back in the house after the wrath of Storm Ophelia earlier this week, so I decided to celebrate (not with the heating on or a big roast dinner - although I came home to them), by heading into my local library where one of the florists in town put on a lovely Autumn / Halloween inspired flower workshop.

What I've Been Up To: Week #26

Last week of school this week before the Summer holidays which meant that as it turned out this week flew. It can always go one of the two ways, and this year it just so happened to go by in the blink of an eye.

Exploring: Killruddery House and Gardens

This week in Ireland, was definitely the hottest week we've had this year so far. We normally spend our weekends renovating or working around the house, but the weather was just so lovely, I couldn't bear to spend it inside.
I found this house on line, and decided to head up to Bray to check it out. They were having a family fun day the following day so I thought it would be better to head up on the Saturday and skip the crowds.

And the heatwave hit.

What I've Been Up To: Week #24

My peonies have opened. I repeat, my peonies have opened.
This is not a drill - and they are just fabulous.

What I've Been Up To: Week #23

Short week this week as we were off work until the Wednesday.

Gave me the chance to relax on the Monday and work on some good old, basic recipes that I used to enjoy at the start of my healthy eating journey.

Recipe: Chicken and Bacon Paella

This had become one of those dishes that has become such a staple in our house - mainly as I tend to use it for bringing a lunch to work. The beauty of this dish is that it nearly tastes better the second time it has been heated, and is such a comfort on those colder days in work. With paella, I'm quite aware that they tend to normally include fish, but as I'm not the biggest fan of those little swimmers, this is an alternative take on it.

With paella, as long as you're using a round, deep pan I think you can pretty much put what ever you want into it, as long as you like it!

What I've Been Up To: Week #22

This week was an interesting one. The start of the bank holiday weekend, a flower festival and a day out with friends meant that we were a little bit busier than normal this week.

Exploring: Bloom In The Park

Yesterday, I headed up to the Phoenix Park in Dublin to go to Bloom In The Park 2017. I should start off by saying that this was my first time heading to Bloom, so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. I'd looked up some pictures from previous years, and came to the conclusion that it's Ireland's answer to the Chelsea Flower Show in England. I was absolutely blessed with the weather on the day, as the sun was splitting the rocks, so armed with my new haircut and with my legs out on show to catch some rays as I walked around I headed off.

What I've Been Up To: Week #21

Week 21, and we're leading up to the last day in May. I managed to find some peonies this week, after seeing so many online and wanting them. They're not opened, but I just loved the colour of them so much to let them go. Fingers crossed that they open over the next few days!

What I've Been Up To: Week #20

Well, I can't believe it's week 20 already in the year. Only six more of these until my holidays from work and then my fun can really begin.

Makeover: Wardrobe, Chest of Drawers and Bedside Locker Upcycle

I've found that, although we definitely find ourselves working on certain big jobs during different weeks, there's always little projects that are taking place behind the scenes. This little up cycle was definitely one of those things that had been pushed by the wayside while the bigger jobs were been tackled, but when I finally had two days to myself last week, I knew I'd be able to work away at it, and be able to tick it off the list.

What I've Been Up To: Week #19

Warm weathers, birthdays, nights out, days off and lots of chocolate
 - week 19 was some week for one week.

What I've Been Up To: Week #18

It was the most stunning week this week, weather wise. The temperature reached the high teens every day, at some point even into the twenties. We didn't know what to do with ourselves. Ireland's a completely different place when the sun shines - there would be no need for us to ever holiday abroad if it stayed this nice.

Recipe: Tanya's Salted Nutella Cookies

My sister popped over to me during the week, and asked for a little bit of assistance. They had an upcoming bake off taking place in work and she wanted to have a little look through some of my cookbooks to try and get a few ideas for something to make. We eventually decided on three different bakes, all from the same cookbook - Tanya Burr's "Tanya Bakes". I put all three bakes up on Instagram after we had baked them, and this recipe is one that got the biggest response.
As someone who has made these a few times, and tasted them even more I can testify that these are definitely worth the bake - nice and sweet with the perfect tang of salt at the end of the mouthful. Just be warned, they are slightly addictive - at least to me anyway!

Makeover: Bathroom

When we originally looked at our house, we knew without a shadow of a doubt that the bathroom would realistically be the first room that we would be renovating - and how right we are. In fact, I'm fully convinced that the look of the bathroom alone (and possibly the master bedroom) were enough to frighten away potential buyers and leave us open to swoop in with our bid. In saying that, as lucky as we were to walk away with the keys to this house, this room will show you exactly the extent of what we were up against.

What I've Been Up To: Week #17

Another busy week, and the last day of Spring has come around. It's finally Summer. I realise that this week's roundup is a little bit later than normal,  but what with the busy weekend we had and the bank holiday also on the week just got away from me.

What I've Been Up To: Week #16

And another week comes to an end, and back to work I go. Easter holidays are officially over which means as of now I'm on countdown to the Summer ones and all those bank holidays in between.

Exploring: Burtown House and Gardens, Athy

As I've said already, I'm on Easter holidays from school this week. There's nothing I hate more than doing nothing when I'm off work, but obviously as Shane works completely different holidays to me it's not always he can afford to go wandering around where ever I want to go. Step forward Rusty, our friend from Kildare, who's currently living in Sweden but came back for a week visit to his parents. He also loves exploring, and is a bit of a keen photographer so when he suggested we go somewhere that would be nice to look around I jumped at the chance.

What I've Been Up To: Week #15

Week one of the Easter holidays has just flown by. It won't be a hot minute before the second week has flown past and I'm back at work, but for now I'm just concentrating on the different things I have coming up this week, and hopefully crossing a few more items off that to-so list of ours.
In the meantime, here's a little snippet of what we got up to last week.

Exploring: Delphi Resort, Co. Mayo

This post is very overdue - I've just been putting it off for ages because it meant that I'd have to sort out through all my photos that I took on this weekend (and I took way too many)! I couldn't help it though - the area in which Delphi Resort is situated is absolutely stunning, and coupled with my drive home through one of the most scenic areas I've come across in Ireland meant that I was definitely camera trigger happy.

I should start by saying the reason I was in Delphi in the first place, the first time since transition year in secondary school where we went on a year bonding trip, was that I was attending the hen party of a friend of mine who's getting married very shortly ( about two and a half week countdown left at this point.

I was invited to attend, and it wouldn't be like to me to resist a good party so off I drove one Friday evening after school.

Makeover: Stag Head Upcycle

We recently did an upcyle on some lovely stag coat hooks that we put up in our newly renovated utility room, and although I was the main picture taker on the day, the process looked so easy that I decided to do one myself on this wooden stag head that we had lying around the house.

This was an anniversary present to Shane, meant as a humorous one as he hates stag heads and antlers and I love them, but he loves making things. After he had made it, even he admitted he liked the look of it. The only issue I had with it was the cheap look of the wood, so seeing as I had some of the Matt Black Spray from Rustoleom left over from the previous upcycle I said I'd put it to good use.

What I've Been Up To: Week 14

Not a single filter on that picture overhead - such glorious weather this week. It didn't even feel like Spring this week, it felt more like Summer. Blue skies, blue bells and sunshine meant it was starting to look good for my Easter holidays from work.

20 Facts About Me

I've been tagged in this pay it forward thing a few times on Instagram over the last few weeks, so I decided that rather than go through it on there, I might turn it into a post and maybe even elaborate on a few of the facts. It also means that unless you really wanted to read them, you won't be able to without clicking through, so I won't be clogging up people's timelines with my ramblings!

I've a feeling that this is going to be a lot harder than I'm currently hoping it won't be, but I'll give it a bash anyway.

Recipe: Banana and Chocolate Chip Bread

A while back I posted a recipe for a gluten free banana bread, full of healthy ingredients and with a taste that tasted wickedly good despite its more nutritious make up.

This recipe is the complete opposite to that.

Although the taste remains just as good, this one is definitely one for the treat table. I've been playing around with this recipe for a while, looking at different versions of it from different sources, and I think this version is the one I'm most happy with.

What I've Been Up To: Week #13

Another week down, and only four and a half days until I'm on my Easter holidays for a full two weeks.

Easter is falling really early this year for us, but there's no way I'm complaining at all - I'm looking forward to the break so much - hoping to cross a few things off the very long list you'll see in this post later on.

Makeover: Coat Hooks Upcycle

I bought these stag head coat hooks two Winters ago, and I've been holding on to them since because I just didn't know where I wanted to put them. I loved them as soon as I saw them, and it didn't hurt that they were cheap as chips to boot.

As we've been chipping away at the back kitchen / utility room I've been busy looking through pinterest and Instagram for inspiration, and I do know that I want a country feel to it, while also using each part of the space for something practical.

As this wall was right beside the back bathroom I knew I wouldn't be able to put anything too protruding in the space , like shelving or a cabinet, where people could hit into it - and suddenly, I remembered my coat hooks.

What I've Been Up To: Week 12

This week was a mixture of crazy weather and amazing fabrics from start to finish.

From scorching sun one day to full on snow the next, it was clear that Ireland was a little all over the place this week, and by the end of the week, both myself and Shane weren't feeling too much better.

Still, we managed to fit in some house shopping, renovation time and even chocolate cake into the mix so it wasn't really a bad week as weeks go!

Makeover: Home Office

One of the big selling points for us when we bought this house originally was the fact that there was a designated office space inside the house. I had gotten into the really bad habit of staying way later in work than I needed to be there because I was so aware that there was no space to do extra week if it was needed in the space that we were renting. To be able to have a space just for that was exactly what we were looking for - and before you think I'm being very mean by not sharing this space with Shane - he gets the shed, which is bigger than the house!

What I've Been Up To: Week #11

Today is the officially the first day of Spring, but the start of last week definitely felt more like it than today does.

Blue skies, pink blossoms, even warmer weather - it really felt like Spring had fully arrived... until the Irish weather remembered what it was supposed to be up to, and pelted down rain for the second half of the week.

I made the most out of both parts of the week - I enjoyed the sun outside for the first half, and got on with a few projects indoors for the wetter weather.

Makeover: Ikea Table Hack

When we first moved into the house, we did as most young couples do and took a day out one weekend and made our way up to our local Ikea store in order to pick up a few things that would tide us over in the house while we were still trying to figure out our style.
One of the things that we picked up was the Lack Table, which comes in at an absolute bargainous 6 euro. We picked up a few of them to substitute as bedside tables, but obviously as time went on, and our style became more obvious to us, I knew we wouldn't need them any more and so I passed them on to our local charity shop so that someone else would be able to get some use out of them.
I did keep one however at the time, and although I wasn't sure what exactly I was keeping it for, we soon found a need for it in our new sitting room.

Makeover: Floating Shelves

If you've been reading up on my daily updates, you'll know that we recently were able to move back into our sitting room, and start using it again. This didn't mean that the room was finished - just that it was habitable again. We still have a few things that we want to do to the room, including building a shelving unit at the back of the room with both hidden and open storage, but we're discussing whether we want to attempt it ourselves or pay a carpenter to build it for us.

In the meantime, in order to be able to put some personal touches into the room, Shane put up these floating shelves over the weekend, and it's so nice to be able to put some "stuff" back into the room again.

Recipe: Nigella's Nutella Brownies

When I originally spotted this recipe, my first thought was NUTELLA.

I love nutella, and it's something that doesn't last in our house too long, which is why I don't buy it as much anymore - anything that you can consume that easily with a spoon is always an issue with me!

There was also so few ingredients needed in the recipe, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Most people will have these ingredients in their house on a daily basis, although hopefully you're able to ration your nutella much better than we are.

What I've Been Up To: Week #10

This week saw the return of blue skies, and not just blue skies, but warm weather blue skies. It was so warm out that I went to work on one of the days in a dress - with no tights! I haven't been able to do that since last Summer. Hopefully, this is just the start of it now - roll on Spring, Summer and all that lark.

Recipe: Bacon & Brie Jacket Potatoes

I first found this recipe in one of my Slimming World magazines that came with a handy recipe tip booklet. I was stuck for an idea for taster night one night, where everyone brings something for everyone to try, in order to get ideas for some new meals. I try to make something that I haven't done before, as it means that even if it doesn't work out, it's not going to go completely to waste, and someone else might like the idea.
I added in smokey bacon pieces instead of normal bacon pieces, and I think this really gives an extra bit of flavour to the meal.

What I've Been Up To: Week #9

Happy Sunday! I can't believe I'm nearly in the double digits of these posts. I've really been enjoying writing them over the last two months, as it's really made me have to really recap what I've been doing with my weeks. It's been nice to have an almost picture diary to be able to check back over the things we've been getting up to. It's also made me want to do more things, in order to have something to write - which I think is always a good thing, gets the motivation to do something going.

Recipe: Tanya's Chocolate Chips Cookies

I've been collecting cookbooks for a little over a year now, and my collection is definitely getting bigger all the time. It started because a book club which comes to our work around once a month normally has cookbooks in their bundle of the month and retail at a much lower price than you'd find in your local bookstore. A book that I often refer back to is one I quite willingly paid full price for last year. Tanya Burr, a youtuber, brought out a cookbook with various easy to follow recipes, but it's her section on cookies and biscuits that keeps me going back for more with.

You can't go wrong with a good chocolate chip cookie recipe, I think - and this one works every time!

Makeover: Sitting Room Mirror Upcycle

In the grand scheme of things that are to be done in the house, this was a relatively small project.

In saying that, it was a project I really enjoyed, and I think it shows how a pop of colour in a room can really change up a space.

Recipe: One Dish Garlic and Thyme Chicken Dinner

This is a recipe that really has become such a fall back dinner for us - I nearly always have chicken in the freezer which can be defrosted for use, and it works well with nearly any sort of vegetable you might have lying around the fridge / freezer. I also happen to have a real soft spot for roasted veggies - I think that roasting them just makes them taste so much nicer than if you were simply boiling them. I think it's the charred edges to them that makes this meal so much nicer than what you would expect it to be.

What I've Been Up To:Week #8

Despite Storm Doris hitting us late Thursday night, there were still plenty of signs of spring around the place. I love this time of year, when flowers are shooting up and the blossoms are on the trees. It makes me want to attack our own garden, but all in it's own good time - we've the whole house to concentrate on first.

What I've Been Up To: Week #7

This week started out lovely and calm, and then  quickly took a turn for the worse, before coming full circle and being lovely all over again. If you thought last week's post was short and sweet, this one is definitely going to beat it in the lack of photos taken stakes!

Exploring: Millennium Cross, Portroe

I mentioned briefly in one of my posts how recently I had gone with a friend, and walked the route up to Millennium Cross in Portroe, Co. Tipperary. I had shared two or three pictures as I didn't want to overload the post, but I had so many great ones that I could have used that I decided to do a post just on the walk itself to show you just how beautiful it is.

What I've Been Up To: Week #6

Unfortunately, last week, I've been a little bit under the weather. We've been so busy renovating at the moment, and with work, the house, badminton, trying to have a small bit of a social life and our recent trip to Amsterdam (which you can catch up with here), I think I just managed to tire myself out a but too much. Burning the candle at both ends so to speak.

I ended up, after two fairly shaky days, going to my doctor on Wednesday where he told me I had both conjunctivitis and a chest infection - never let it be said that I do things by halves! Needless to say, taking photos of my week went to the back of my mind, and realistically there wasn't much I was up to as a result, so this post will be short and sweet.

Exploring: Amsterdam

This year, we've decided to up the ante and try to visit as many places as we can - whether it's in Ireland or further afield. When friends of ours were visiting us recently, we started talking about places we'd like to visit this year, and Amsterdam popped into the conversation. Rusty and Emma had never been, and although myself and Shane had visited before, it was about three years ago  and we will excited about returning there, to see if it would differ from our first time there.

The guys were flying in late from Sweden on the Thursday night, and we were flying in early on the Friday morning so it gave us a good two and a half days to discover and rediscover as much as we could about Amsterdam.
The biggest difference this time round was that I was going back 11 and a half stone lighter, so I wondered if my experience would differ from this.
